VIBE CHECK: ELLA TUBMAN

The Gold Coast based videographer, photographer, animator and artist on inspiration, beginnings, and the work she loves most

In our work we collaborate with some pretty inspiring people. Welcome to Vibe Check – our new interview series where we ask founders, creatives and industry leaders what drives them, what's on their radar, and where they see things heading.

Our first featured creative is Ella Tubman - a multi-talented videographer, photographer, editor/animator and artist. She’s also just an amazing human. We've had the pleasure of working with Ella across a range of client projects over the last few years - she's one of those people who makes it all look effortless while quietly delivering beyond the brief every time.

Q: How did you first get into creating?

A: I started making skate videos with my neighbours and friends at the skatepark when I was around 11 years old and would upload them to YouTube. That’s when I started learning to edit too. Then later in my early teens I found a real interest in cinema and movies, so I did film class at high school. I had a great teacher who believed in me and he told me I could make a career out of shooting for brands if I wanted to….so I just kept shooting with my friends on the weekends and started doing paid videos for local brands in Byron / Sunshine Coast / Gold Coast!

Q: Who or what inspires you the most?

A: Movies, music, music videos and magazines inspire me most! Lately I have been loving getting inspiration from old punk music magazines - so much creative stuff in there.

Q: How would you describe your personal style?

A: I think gritty - skate influenced.

Q: You are wildly talented in so many different areas – art, design, photography, film and your signature collage work. Does one have your heart? Or do you feel them pull at different times?

A: Ooo good question! I really enjoy photography, particularly black and white photography. I’m finding my portrait shots have so much emotion and it’s so captivating.  Skateboarding photography also brings me so much joy too, shooting the action/grit of it all is so exciting.

Q: What are some brands you feel are doing super cool things right now, either in their products or in their creative work?

A: ‘Two Jeys’ do super inspiring creative campaigns

Q: What’s one thing that really excites you about the industry right now?

A: I love how there’s so much great content out there, it’s easy to get inspired

Q: What’s been your most memorable shoot and why?

A: My first big campaign shoot in India and China when I was 19! I was blown away.

Q: What’s the least glamorous part of what you do?

A: Sore eyes from editing, sore back from shooting. Long days in the sun. Love it all though!

If you ever get the chance to work with Ella, make sure you jump on it! Few creatives can move between photography, film and design the way she does - and fewer still manage to make it all feel like one cohesive vision. Check out more of Ella’s work on her website or instagram
